Eli Lilly$1,010bn(May 26)UnitedHealth$470bn(May 26)

Market value of Eli Lilly and UnitedHealth, 2020 to 2026. Billions of dollars.

Why this is happening
  • Lilly's weight-loss and diabetes drugs opened a market measured in the hundreds of billions, and investors raced to price it in.
  • UnitedHealth, the giant of US health insurance, ran into rising medical costs and political and regulatory pressure.
  • So the market re-rated the company that sells the cure far above the one that pays the bills.
The take

Wall Street has decided the cure is worth more than the business of managing the disease. If these weight-loss drugs deliver, the repricing spreads, to insurers, hospitals and even food companies.
