Money legally staked on sports with US bookmakers each year, in billions. In 2017 that meant Nevada alone; the Supreme Court freed the other states in May 2018. Bookmakers kept $17bn of 2025's $167bn; the rest went back out as winnings.
Why this is happening
- The Supreme Court struck down the federal betting ban in 2018 and let each state choose. Nearly 40 have said yes, because legalising turns an existing black market into jobs and tax revenue.
- The phone did the rest. More than nine in ten dollars are now staked through apps built to remove every ounce of friction: same-game parlays, push alerts, money deposited in seconds.
- The scale has passed the entertainment giants: the $167bn staked is about two and a half times what the whole world spent on recorded music and cinema tickets combined, and the bookmakers' $17bn keep is roughly double America's entire box office.
The take
This is a consumer market conjured from nothing in eight years. The bill is arriving with it: studies tie state legalisation to more bankruptcies and lower household savings, and the leagues that spent decades suing to stop gambling now sell it at every commercial break. The NFL season starts in two weeks; for the bookmakers, it never really ends.
