ChatGPT reached a billion users in three years. Facebook took eight.

ChatGPT
3 yrs
TikTok
5 yrs
YouTube
6 yrs
Facebook
8 yrs

Years from launch to one billion users.

Why this is happening
  • It was useful from the very first try, free and in a browser, so people went from hearing about it to using it in seconds.
  • It also arrived on a world already online, with a phone in every hand, so there was nothing left to wire up.
  • And each wave of technology scales faster than the last, riding the reach the one before it built.
The take

ChatGPT is a genuine breakthrough, and the speed is the proof. The flip side is the warning: anything that reaches a billion people in three years can upend an industry just as fast, with no time to adapt.
